What is an EIN?

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a unique nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify an organization for federal tax purposes. All organizations are required to have an EIN. Please note that an EIN is not the same as a tax-exempt number, which is typically assigned by a state agency.
