What is a fiscal sponsor?

A fiscal sponsor is a registered nonprofit organization that agrees to extend its legal and tax-exempt status to another group, cause, or organization that is not yet registered as a nonprofit.

In essence, the fiscal sponsor acts as the administrative and legal "home" for the cause or organization. This can be particularly beneficial for startup nonprofits, smaller projects or groups, and temporary or pilot initiatives.

Please note that GlobalGiving cannot serve as a fiscal sponsor or help organizations find one.

If your organization is fiscally sponsored, both you and your fiscal sponsor will need to complete applications with GlobalGiving:

  1. When starting your survey or application, indicate that your organization is not a registered nonprofit and that it is fiscally sponsored by a registered nonprofit.

  2. GlobalGiving will then contact your fiscal sponsor to confirm and validate the relationship.

  3. Both the interested organization and the fiscal sponsor must complete due diligence applications.
